Willow Glen is a prominent neighborhood of San Jose. It began as a marshy area with numerous willow trees surrounding the Los Gatos Creek and Guadalupe River. It was drained in the early 1900’s and planted with orchards. By the 1930’s the growth of the community made it necessary to join the City of San Jose in 1936. Willow Glen today has walkable tree-lined streets, Norman Rockwell-style charm, diverse architecture, specialty shops, and independent businesses.
Living in Willow Glen
The historic Downtown Willow Glen on Lincoln Avenue between Willow Street and Minnesota Avenue is a well-known “walkable” downtown community. Here you will find a bustling shopping district filled with shoppers, strollers and dogs walking up and down the sweeping tree-lined sidewalks. Popular restaurants in Downtown are The Table, Opa, Aqui’s, Siena Bistro and Yuki Sushi.
Willow Glen residents have a distinct Christmas tree decoration tradition. This annual custom involves buying similar, very small, Christmas Trees and placing them in the front yard 10 feet from the sidewalk with multicolored lights. The uniform look is striking and brings a lot of cheer to the holidays.
