Originally a gold mining town, by 1912 it became the earliest home of the motion picture industry with Charlie Chaplin filming a few movies here. In 1954 the eight small towns of Alvarado, Decoto, Niles, Centerville, Irvington, Newark, Mission San Jose, and Warm Springs were incorporated creating the current City of Fremont. By the 1980s and the beginning of the technology boom, Fremont was the original home of Apple’s first Macintosh manufacturing facility. Now, technology corporations are a significant portion of the local economy. Most recently Tesla Motors has opened its headquarters in Fremont putting the city in the spotlight of cutting-edge industry once again.

With the beautiful weather in this region, there are many opportunities in Fremont for people who like to explore the outdoors. Mission Peak is a dramatic backdrop to the city and Mission Peak Regional Preserve is a center for hiking, biking, horseback riding, hang gliding and camping. Within Fremont, there are several excellent parks. Central Park with Lake Elizabeth is very popular with residents. The busy Fremont Recreation Department operates the area’s historical sites, the Aqua Adventure Waterpark, a skate park, a sports complex, a tennis center, the Fremont Park Golf Club, three program centers, and four community centers.

There are ample cultural venues in the city. Fremont boasts a handful of art galleries and museums, including the Olive Hyde Art Gallery. Run by the Olive Hyde Art Guild, this nonprofit gallery is a showcase for both local artists and traveling exhibits.
